I was having a conversation with a friend when he said (while I was laughing hysterically at his ridiculousness, of course) that he thought the best thing he had ever done was score a basket. Like, the best thing he ever did was shoot a basketball. I had a similar conversation with a friend who said he always had his clothes on when he was out playing basketball, and that he didn’t have to think about what to wear.
This reminds me of a conversation I had with a woman last year who said she had played basketball since she was a kid. She said that her father told her how he would always be yelling at her to put on her shoes and socks when she went out to play. The point is that even though we probably all have an innate desire to play basketball, we sometimes forget that it is an activity that requires conscious effort.
This is something that I had to think about this year when I was feeling really bad about myself. I was really depressed because my wife and son were in the hospital and I didn’t know what I was going to do without them. I kept thinking about all the ways I could use my athletic prowess with the game of basketball.
The thing about playing basketball is that no matter what you do it’s a physical activity. So even if you don’t feel like you have the best shot to score, you’re still going to get your body moving. I can’t imagine what I would do if I never played basketball.
I think I know how you feel, but it seems like it would be hard to not get depressed after missing so much of our son’s life. I guess I’m just glad he isn’t playing basketball right now. Because when you play basketball you have to be able to get up and move. And just like the football player, there are always goals and targets you have to hit.
